Cascade Campground sits at about 9,000 feet in Chalk Creek Canyon amid a mixed stand of Douglas fir and aspen, with the chalky white kaolinite canyon walls visible in places. The small facility has 21 individual sites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table and metal campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets, potable water, and firewood for sale. Chalk Creek runs just across the road and is a good spot for stream fishing (the best pools are above Cascade Falls), while Chalk Lake lies roughly a mile east and is known for family fishing with rainbow, brook and brown trout. The campground is only a short drive from Cascade Falls and sits within five miles of a private hot springs resort, and a network of high-country recreation lies nearby: the Colorado Trail, the Narrow Gauge Trail and the Cascade Loop Trail are within easy reach, and popular off-road rides Mount Antero, Baldwin Lake, Tincup Pass, Hancock Pass and nearby lakes begin a short distance away. Practical details matter here because Cascade is a busy site: some campsites are reservable while others are strictly walk-up. Sites #2 7 and #11 12 are first-come, first-served walk-up sites; site #1 is occupied by the host from mid-May through Labor Day weekend and becomes a walk-up site afterward; the remaining sites may be reserved through Recreation.gov. Expect the campground to fill by Friday (often starting Thursday), so plan accordingly. Reservation and cancellation rules are standard: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; canceling the day before or the day of arrival results in a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's charge; one-night reservations forfeited if canceled; no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night. Refund requests must be submitted within seven days of your reservation end date, and emergency closures will result in full refunds. Beyond the campground, the broader Pike and San Isabel/Cimarron Comanche landscape offers a wide range of activities hiking, fishing, biking, OHV routes, horseback riding and horse camping, boating on nearby lakes and river sections, wildlife viewing, and more and historic St. Elmo, Salida and Buena Vista are all short drives away for supplies, dining and river recreation on the Arkansas River.
