“Great access to a lake, river and several hiking trails.”
“I love this little campground. I had a perfect view of the waterfall from my bed in my van. Nice hike up to it right across the road-walked from my campsite. Amazing views and sound of the running water nearby. Last year my campsite was right ALONG the river/stream. ”
“The campground is best for group camping, since many sites are right next to each other. Great for families with the creeks and small lake to explore.”

Chalk Lake Campground sits high in Chalk Creek Canyon in Chaffee County at about 9,000 feet, where the canyon's white, chalk-like kaolinite walls left by ancient hot-spring activity frame a compact, well-used camping area. The campground has a total of 19 campsites: 12 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 7 tent-only sites. Each site comes with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; accessible vault toilets are provided and a few sites are designated as accessible. Firewood is sold on-site. Reservations are mixed with first-come, first-served availability: sites #4 9 and #14 are walk-up, while the remaining sites are reservable (site #1 is occupied by the host from mid-May to mid-September and becomes a walk-up site afterward). Because the campground is popular often full by Friday and sometimes as early as Thursday first-come status does not guarantee you'll find an open site when you arrive. Note also that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated across these national forest and grassland lands and must follow federal and Forest Service rules. Recreation at Chalk Lake and in the surrounding Pike-San Isabel and Cimarron-Comanche lands is broad: Chalk Lake sits adjacent to the loops of campsites and is a family-friendly fishing spot for rainbow, brook and brown trout (no motorized boats allowed), while Chalk Creek fishing is best upstream of Cascade Falls. The Cascade Loop Trail runs across the road from the campground and the Chalk Creek Trailhead, about two miles east, gives hikers access to long-distance routes including the Colorado Trail; trailheads and OHV trails nearby open onto popular rides to Mount Antero, Baldwin Lake, Tincup Pass, Hancock Pass and Pomeroy Lakes. Wildlife viewing mule deer, hummingbirds, chipmunks and birds of prey is reliable, and you're less than 4 miles from a private hot springs resort if you want a soak after a day on the trail. If you need services or a wider range of activities, historic St. Elmo is about 15 minutes away and the towns of Salida and Buena Vista are a short drive down the valley with restaurants, outfitters and river-access for rafting on the Arkansas River. If you reserve, be aware of the campground's cancellation rules: cancellations up to two days before the arrival incur a $10 fee; canceling the day before or the day of arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations are fully forfeited), no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night, and refunds must be requested through Recreation.gov within seven days after the trip (credit-card refunds go back to the original card; check or cash refunds are mailed as Treasury checks and can take 6 8 weeks).
