Perched in Chalk Creek Canyon at about 8,600 feet, Mount Princeton Campground sits where the white, chalk-like kaolinite canyon walls give the creek its name and a stand of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir supplies partial shade. Chalk Creek is reachable from the loop and flows east from the Collegiate Peaks; Chalk Lake lies roughly a mile west and stream fishing is best above Cascade Falls about two miles farther, with Chalk Lake stocked with rainbow, brook and brown trout. The campground contains 19 sites in total each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents on gravel parking spurs; every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. A few sites are wheelchair accessible and there are wheelchair-accessible vault toilets on site; firewood is sold at the campground. A private hot springs resort is within about four miles, making it easy to combine a night under the pines with a soak afterward. The area around Mount Princeton offers a wide range of recreation: immediate opportunities include camping, picnicking and creek access for fishing and short hikes, while the broader Pike, San Isabel and Cimarron/Comanche lands support biking, boating, climbing, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle travel, wildlife viewing and long-distance trail travel on sections of the Continental Divide and Colorado Trail. Popular nearby drives and OHV/4x4 routes lead to Mount Antero, Baldwin Lake, Tincup Pass, Hancock Pass and Pomeroy/Hancock Lakes; the historic ghost town of St. Elmo is about a 15-minute drive, and the towns of Salida and Buena Vista with restaurants, shops and access to more than 100 miles of Arkansas River for rafting, fishing and paddling are a short drive away. The campground is busy (often full starting Friday and sometimes as early as Thursday), and while a few sites (#1 and 14 17) are strictly walk-up, most sites are reservable; site #2 is occupied by a host from mid-May through Labor Day weekend and reverts to walk-up afterward. Note the reservation policies: cancellations up to two days before the reservation incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or on arrival incurs a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations are fully forfeited); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted within seven days of the reservation end date and are returned to the original payment method (cash/check refunds are mailed and may take several weeks); in the event of an emergency closure, all fees are refunded. For access, travel south from Buena Vista on Highway 285 to Nathrop, then follow County Road 162 west about seven miles to the campground.
