“Nice campground, great hosts. My only critique is that some of the spots are smaller than you think. We had a 20’ trailer and couldn’t really park our car well in there also. Some spots are more spacious ”
“Campsite was large and the restrooms were some of the best I've experienced”

Collegiate Peaks Campground sits at about 9,800 feet on Middle Cottonwood Creek, 11 miles west of Buena Vista along Highway 306 just below the top of Cottonwood Pass. The campground is set in a mixed stand of conifers and aspen, with some sites right beside the creek and others tucked back into the trees; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so expect sudden weather shifts. The area is oriented toward hikers and anglers: Denny Creek Trailhead is less than a mile away and leads into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness toward Kroenke Lake and Mt. Yale, while the Ptarmigan Lake Trailhead is under three miles out and is a good choice for wildflower displays. Middle Cottonwood Creek supports brook trout, and determined anglers can also find rainbow and cutthroat trout in beaver ponds west of the campground. Buena Vista, five to 15 minutes east, offers a commercial hot springs inn about 5 miles away and a wide range of river recreation on the Arkansas River along with restaurants, galleries and outfitters; beyond the immediate area the Pike and San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands provide extensive opportunities for biking, boating, climbing, horseback riding, OHV use and wildlife viewing across nearly 3 million acres. Note that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on these public lands and must be operated according to current laws and Forest Service policy. Facilities are straightforward and family-friendly: the campground contains exactly 56 sites across three loops, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; drinking water and vault toilets are provided. Reservation options are mixed sites 1 and 18 30 are strictly walk-up, first-come, first-served, while the remaining sites may be reserved in advance; site #2 is occupied by the host from mid-May through September and becomes a walk-up site afterward. Because this is a very popular spot it frequently fills by Friday (sometimes as early as Thursday), so plan accordingly. Cancellation and no-show policies are enforced: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancellations the day before or on arrival incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation end date; card refunds are returned to the original payment method, while cash/check refunds are issued by Treasury check and may take 6 8 weeks. In the event of an emergency closure, fees will be fully refunded.
