O'Haver Lake Campground sits at about 9,200 feet on the shore of O'Haver Lake, surrounded by stands of ponderosa pine and aspen that give the air a pine-vanilla scent and flash gold in autumn. The site has 32 campsites in total: 29 are configured for both RVs and tents and 3 are tent-only, and the campground is laid out to give easy access to the water and nearby trails. An accessible fishing pier and opportunities for non-motorized boating make the lake a draw for anglers seeking rainbow and brook trout; if you bring a canoe or kayak, please be mindful of anglers and keep to non-motorized craft only. Vault toilets, drinking water, trash collection, a campground host and on-site firewood sales are provided; vault toilets and potable water mean basic comforts but plan to pack other supplies. The area is popular for bird watching, shoreline fishing and quiet paddling, while the old Denver & Rio Grande railroad grade, Crest Trail links between Monarch and Marshall Pass, and routes such as Silver Creek, Starvation Creek, Poncha Creek and the Rainbow Trail put strong mountain-biking, hiking and OHV options within easy reach Shirley Site nearby functions as a common staging area for summer OHV and mountain bike use and winter snowmobiling. This campground is heavily used and often full on weekends (sometimes as early as Thursday), so arrive prepared: several sites are held as walk-up first-come, first-served rather than reservable specifically sites #1 5, #7, #13, #21, #23 and #24 while all other sites are reservable; Site #6 is occupied by the host from mid-May through September and reverts to walk-up after that. Reservation and fee rules are firm: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee; cancellations the day before or the day of arrival are charged a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount if canceled). No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate; refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation ends and will be returned to the original payment method (check/cash refunds are mailed and can take 6 8 weeks). Access to the campground is from the Poncha Springs/Poncha Pass area south of Salida via Highway 285 and County Roads 200/202; if you plan to fly an unmanned aircraft, be aware that drones are regulated on National Forest lands and must follow Forest Service and FAA rules.
