Monarch Park Campground sits just north of Monarch Pass along Highway 50 at about 10,500 feet, offering 35 campsites that are set up to accommodate both tents and RVs (all 35 sites are listed as both RV and tent sites). The campground's sites are spread along a creek and in spots that reach the banks of the river that runs through the valley; beaver ponds near the entrance create a shallow, kid-friendly fishing area while the river and nearby ponds are more likely to yield brook trout for anglers. Hikers will find easy access to long-distance routes the Continental Divide/Colorado Trail runs through this corridor and local loops such as Waterdog Lakes, the Monarch Crest Trail, Hunt and Boss Lakes provide high-alpine scenery and late-summer wildflower displays. At this elevation expect cool nights year-round; the setting feels alpine rather than low-country and the approach is the high-mountain road out of Poncha Springs toward Monarch Pass. Practical comforts at Monarch Park are basic but serviceable: each campsite includes a picnic table and campfire ring, there is drinking water from a hand pump, and vault toilets (one is wheelchair accessible). Firewood is sold onsite, but there are no electrical or sewer hookups, so RV visitors should plan accordingly; the nearest RV dump is at the Poncha Springs Visitor Center (7001 Highway 285). For the 2021 season this campground operated on a first-come, first-served basis; when reservations are used the standard Recreation.gov policies apply cancellations more than two days before a start date incur a $10 fee, same-day or day-before cancellations forfeit the first night plus a $10 service fee, one-night reservations forfeit the full amount if canceled, no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus forfeit the first night, and refund requests must be made within seven days after the reservation end date. Finally, visitors should be aware that use of unmanned aircraft (drones) on National Forest and Grassland lands is regulated and must follow Forest Service policies.
