About

Dowdy Lake Campground sits on the forested shore of a 115-acre lake about 48 miles northwest of Fort Collins, close to the small community of Red Feather Lakes. The trees are primarily ponderosa pine at roughly 8,200 feet elevation, so days are warm and thin-air dry while afternoons in spring and summer commonly bring thunderstorms; recent mountain pine beetle work has opened the canopy in places, so some sites have reduced shade. The lake itself is a quiet place for paddling and fishing a no-wake setting with motorized boats allowed under a 10 mph limit and anglers chase brown, brook, cutthroat and lake trout. From the campground you can connect to a network of hiking, biking and horseback trails (including the four-mile Mount Margaret Trail), and several off-road vehicle routes lie within about five miles. Wildlife viewing is a common pastime, and the nearby Red Feather Visitor Center and the amenities of the village a few eateries, general stores and a small golf course make it easy to pick up supplies or information. The campground has 62 sites in total: 52 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents with electric hookups, while 10 are tent-only sites without hookups. Sites come with a tent pad, picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Sites are arranged across five loops (Loop A: 8 sites; Loop B: 6 sites; Loop C: 16 sites; Loop D: 7 sites; Loop E: 25 sites), so groups can often reserve clusters or choose quieter corners; dead-and-down firewood can be gathered in the forest or bought in bundles from the campground host. Access from Fort Collins is generally by heading north toward Livermore and then west on County Road 74 toward the Red Feather Lakes area, and visitors should plan for higher-elevation driving conditions. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal openings, check the U.S. Forest Service or the local visitor center before you go.
