Mountain Park Campground sits on the banks of the Cache la Poudre River about 40 miles west of Fort Collins along Colorado Highway 14, just up Poudre Canyon near mile marker 98.8. The site is set in a forest of ponderosa pines on the canyon floor, with steep mountain walls and a mix of dense timber and open meadows that create good habitat for songbirds, raptors and the usual Colorado wildlife. The river itself is the draw: paddlers come for whitewater runs and anglers fish for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding thread the surrounding hills; nearby routes include the Mt. McConnel Trail, the William R. Kreutzer National Recreation Trail and the Young Gulch Trail. Within the campground there's a small recreation area with volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and horseshoe pits, making it easy to keep kids and groups occupied between river trips and trail outings. The campground contains a total of 30 campsites; all 30 sites accommodate both RVs and tents. In addition to these individual sites, Mountain Park offers accessible single- and double-family sites and a group site that can hold up to 75 people. Campsites come with picnic tables, 12x15' tent pads, campfire rings and grills; potable drinking water and vault toilets are provided, and coin showers are available at the campground. Electric hookups are offered at some sites confirm hookup availability when you book and dead-and-downed firewood may be collected in the forest or bought from the host. For trip planning, check current fees, reservation policies, seasonal opening dates and any vehicle or fire restrictions with the Forest Service or campground host before you go. Beyond the campground, the broader Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee grassland offer auto touring, OHV routes, boating and winter-sports opportunities, hunting, interpretive programs, a visitor center and plenty of additional backcountry recreation.
