Silver Dollar Campground sits on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake under a canopy of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir at about 10,000 feet, making it a family-friendly base for boating, hiking and fishing on the high-country water. The campground's 38 single-family sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring, and parking spurs are gravel or dirt. From camp you're within easy walking distance of the shoreline and the 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail, which winds through the forest to the lake and links with the longer 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail that follows the shoreline from Sugar Loaf Dam to May Queen Campground. Boaters use nearby Matchless Boat Ramp, and anglers chase stocked cutthroat, rainbow, brown and lake trout; the Mount Massive Wilderness a 30,540-acre alpine expanse anchored by Colorado's 14,421-foot Mount Massive is close enough for day trips and higher-elevation hikes. Practical facilities include vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection, with firewood available for purchase from the on-site host. There is an extra vehicle fee of $10.00; reservation and cancellation rules are strictly applied cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee, cancellations the day before or the day of arrival pay a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeited in full), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's rate. Visitors seeking refunds must request them through their Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation ends; refunds are returned to the original payment method (Treasury checks are issued for cash or check payments and may take several weeks). Access from Leadville is via County Road 4 to the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area and then onto County Road 9C to the campground entrance. Note also that unmanned aircraft systems (drones) are regulated on these lands and operators should follow Forest Service guidance before flying.
