“Very high altitude. Stunningly beautiful and peaceful. Fun to ride a bike on old Camp Hale roads, interesting history. ”
“You can tell that the facilities have been upgraded some--newer picnic tables and fire pits at some of the sites. As well as bear safes. Clean pit toilets. Great location and i really enjoy smaller campgrounds like this one-the sites are fairly large. ”

Camp Hale Memorial Campground sits at 9,200 feet in a broad, open valley ringed by young lodgepole pines, and its quiet character is defined as much by history as by high-country light. During World War II the 10th Mountain Division trained here in skiing and mountaineering and the 99th Infantry (the Viking Battalion) also used the site; most of the original buildings are gone now, but concrete foundations and other footprints remain, and interpretive signs along US-24 tell the story as you drive past. The campground itself contains 21 sites, and each one is set up to accommodate both tents and RVs; sites are simple but serviceable, with picnic tables, metal campfire rings and vault toilets. There is no drinking water or electrical hookup on site, and the access road, parking area and site spurs are all gravel, so plan to arrive with your own water and suitable tires and expect a rustic experience at high elevation. Outdoor opportunities concentrate both immediately around the campground and across the wider White River National Forest. The headwaters of the Eagle River are nearby, and anglers will find trout-filled pockets of river as well as several ponds just south of the campground for casting rainbow and brown trout; the Colorado Trail also crosses within easy walking distance and the gravel roads through the valley make good low-traffic routes for walking and bike riding. Wildlife sightings are common in the forested and alpine areas from elk and bighorn sheep on higher ridges to cutthroat and rainbow trout in the streams and the resort town of Vail is a short drive away for alpine recreation, dining, and services. Practical note for planners: all 21 sites are reservable, but once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation, so confirm your plans before arrival.
