About

Molly Brown Campground sits on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in a stand of lodgepole pine, about five miles west of Leadville. The campground is arranged in two loops of single-family sites that total 45 campsites: 43 sites are sized for both RVs and tents and 2 are tent-only. Each campsite has a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection are provided, and firewood is available for purchase from the on-site host. The road approach is straightforward from Leadville via County Road 4 and County Road 9C, and an extra-vehicle fee of $10 applies if you bring more than one vehicle to your site. The lake and nearby trails define the recreational draw: a 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail is an easy loop through the forest with shoreline access and it connects to the longer 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail that follows the water from the dam to May Queen Campground (pick up a trail guide before you go to learn about local plants and wildlife). Turquoise Lake is popular for sailing, canoeing and boating, and anglers commonly fish for mackinaw and rainbow trout. Beyond the lake, the Mount Massive Wilderness home to Mount Massive (14,421 feet) and extensive alpine terrain is within easy reach, and the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway offers a drive over Independence Pass toward Aspen. Molly Brown sits inside the broader Peaks to Prairies recreation area, where activities across the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and the Cimarron and Comanche grasslands include biking, climbing, horseback riding, OHV use, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Reservations are managed through Recreation.gov: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or on arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations are fully forfeited if canceled); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and lose the first night's fee; refund requests must be submitted within seven days after your reservation end date. Also note that unmanned aircraft systems (drones) are regulated on national forest lands check Forest Service UAS rules and recreational-drone guidance before flying.
