About

Father Dyer Campground sits on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake among stands of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir, offering a wooded, lakeside setting that draws families and small groups in the summer for boating, hiking and fishing. The campground is named for Father John Lewis Dyer, an early Methodist circuit-rider who skied over Mosquito Pass; that mixture of history and high-country character carries through to the surrounding landscape. A gentle 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail loops through the forest to the shoreline and links with the longer 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail that runs from Sugar Loaf Dam to May Queen Campground, while Matchless Boat Ramp sits about two miles south for launching sailboats, canoes and other watercraft. Anglers can expect stocked cutthroat, rainbow, brown and lake trout in the lake, and the Mount Massive Wilderness home to Colorado's second-highest peak and extensive alpine terrain is within easy reach for day hikes or longer backcountry outings; Independence Pass and the Top of the Rockies Byway are nearby for high-elevation scenic driving. Practical camping details are straightforward: Father Dyer has 23 single-family sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, each with a picnic table and a campfire ring; parking spurs are gravel or dirt. The campground provides vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection, and firewood is available for purchase from the on-site host. An extra vehicle fee applies ($10), and visitors should be aware of Recreation.gov reservation rules: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee, cancellations on the day before or day of arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeited in full), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; card refunds go back to the original payment method, while cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check and can take 6 8 weeks. Finally, if you plan to use a drone, note that Unmanned Aircraft Systems are regulated on Forest Service lands check current Forest Service UAS policy and recreational drone guidance before flying.
