Spillway Campground sits at about 8,500 feet on the edge of Eleven Mile Canyon, just below the dam on the South Platte River and roughly nine miles up the canyon from the entrance off County Road 96 (south of Lake George via Highway 24). The reservoir here stretches about five miles and covers 3,405 surface acres, so water is the defining feature: anglers cast from shore or launch a canoe for rainbow and brown trout, kokanee salmon and the occasional pike, while boaters can take advantage of the reservoir's length. The canyon itself is cut through polished gray granite cliffs that attract rock climbers to solid routes and birders to nesting raptors; golden eagles are often seen on the cliffs and bald eagles are more likely in spring. The campground's 22 reservable sites are split between nine that accommodate both RVs and tents and 13 tent-only sites; a few sites are shaded by scattered spruce and ponderosa pine and the campground is the nearest developed camping area to the reservoir for anyone wanting quick water access. Facilities are straightforward and rustic: gravel parking aprons that will hold trailers up to 25 feet, vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire rings and a hand pump for drinking water. Sites must be reserved through Recreation.gov and the reservation policies are enforced cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; canceling the day before or on arrival triggers a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeited entirely if cancelled); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; in the event of an emergency closure all fees will be refunded. A reminder for visitors who fly cameras: unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on these public lands and must be operated in compliance with Forest Service rules and federal law. For site-specific questions call the facility at (661) 702-1420.
