Riverside Campground sits at about 8,000 feet on the rim of Eleven Mile Canyon, with the South Platte River flowing just across Highway 96 and polished gray granite walls rising on either side of the valley. The setting is open and readable large sites, river benches, and a short walk to a one-mile interpretive loop (the Hard Rock Trail) that finishes at an overlook of the canyon so days here naturally divide between riverbank fishing, wildlife watching, and short hikes. Anglers can expect rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout in the South Platte, and benches along the water make patient fishing comfortable; rock climbers also use the granite walls in the canyon and Eleven Mile Reservoir, five miles downriver and covering about 3,405 surface acres, provides boating opportunities a short drive away. Wildlife is common: keep an eye out for elk and mule deer in the evenings and for smaller residents such as chipmunks and porcupines during the day. Note that Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) are regulated on these public lands and must be used in compliance with Forest Service rules. The campground has 18 reservable sites in total seven that accommodate both RVs (up to 30 feet) and tents and eleven designated tent-only (walk-in) sites so it works well for small RVs and traditional tent camping but is not suited to large rigs. Sites have grass-and-gravel parking aprons, a picnic table and a campfire ring; vault toilets are onsite but there is no drinking water, so bring your own. Reservations and cancellations follow Recreation.gov policies: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or on arrival results in a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; card refunds return to the original payment method, while cash/check refunds are mailed as Treasury checks and may take 6 8 weeks. For site-specific questions call the facility at (661) 702-1420.
