“The campground was clean, neat and quiet. The check in was easy and my tent site level and without any obstructions.”

Timber Creek Campground sits on the park's west side along the Colorado River at about 8,900 feet (3,000 m), roughly eight miles north of the Grand Lake entrance and reached by following Trail Ridge Road across the park if you're coming from the Estes Park side. The site's character is shaped by recent disturbances mountain pine beetle and wildfire removed much of the mature canopy, so campsites are exposed with little natural shade; that openness, however, makes it easy to see regrowth in the surrounding forest, wildflower-filled meadows in summer, and frequent wildlife such as mule deer and elk along the river corridor (black bear, coyote, bighorn sheep and moose also live in the park but are seen less often). Fishing along the Colorado River is a close-by option from the campground, and the west-side trail network Colorado River Trail, Coyote Valley Trail, Green Mountain and many others gives you immediate hiking access; a scenic drive along Trail Ridge Road or Old Fall River Road takes you into the alpine tundra and to the Alpine Visitor Center, while the Holzwarth Historic Site is a short drive down the road for a dose of local history. The campground contains 81 single-family sites spread across four loops (Loop A: 12 sites; Loop B: 24; Loop C: 20; Loop D: 25), with a fairly even split of camping options: 40 sites are set up for both RVs and tents, 1 site is RV-only, and 40 are tent-only (some are walk-to). Sites are basic but reliable each has a picnic table and a metal fire ring with grate; RV sites do not have hookups and the maximum vehicle length for the entire campground is 30 feet (9 m). There is no group camping here (groups should look to Glacier Basin Campground on the east side), and during the summer season a dump station is available inside the campground in addition to scattered dumpsters and recycling areas. Reservations are handled on rolling windows: many sites can be reserved up to six months in advance while others are released two weeks or one week before arrival; availability displays use "A" for open and "NR" for Not Yet Released when a site is not yet offered for booking. The location and facilities make Timber Creek a practical base for auto touring, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, picnicking and other park activities, but plan for high-elevation conditions and strong sun exposure given the sparse shade.
