The AA Bar Ranch (AA Barn) Group Picnic Site is a single reservable, day-use group site located on the Forest Service road network about 12 miles north of Granby on Highway 34, then a short drive east on County Road 66 to the Green Ridge Complex. It sits immediately adjacent to the Colorado River headwaters just below the Shadow Mountain Reservoir dam and shares a trailhead into Rocky Mountain National Park, so you'll have immediate access on foot to riverbanks, Forest Service trails and RMNP routes. Motorized access to the gated driveway and any use of the barn is by reservation only; when you reserve you'll be issued gate access during normal business hours (this site has limited staffing call (970) 295-6600 for details). The site is strictly day-use (maximum 100 people per day), the suggested vehicle limit is 20, and vehicles must remain on the gravel parking areas public visitors may walk the driveway but may not drive it. Dogs are allowed on-site but must be leashed on Forest Service land; note that dogs are prohibited once you enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Organizers should also respect the site's rules: do not alter physical features, pack out all trash, and amplified sound is not permitted. The focal point is an enclosed, two-story historic barn (the upper floor is closed to public use) with electricity on the lower level; be prepared for wide temperature swings without heat it can stay cold well into summer mornings, while late afternoons can become hot in direct sun. The site provides substantial furniture for larger gatherings: 10 banquet tables, 90 folding chairs and 13 picnic tables, and there are handicap-accessible vault toilets nearby. Old corrals and ranch structures remain on the property and make strong photographic backdrops, though they are not suitable for livestock. Recreational opportunities radiate outward: casting a line near the river, hiking into Rocky Mountain National Park from the adjacent trailhead, and easy drives to nearby Green Ridge Campground, Arapaho National Recreation Area, Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Lake Granby. Because this is the forest/park interface with limited on-site staff and a single group site available, plan ahead reserve the barn and gate access in advance and confirm any questions with the Forest Service office.
