West Chicago Creek Campground sits alongside its namesake creek at the base of Mount Evans in an aspen and lodgepole pine stand at about 9,600 feet elevation. The site is relatively small there are 14 campsites in total, with 11 sites configured for both RVs and tents, one RV-only site, and two tent-only sites and each space includes a tent pad, picnic table, charcoal grill and fire ring. The campground provides a vault toilet, a water spigot and a central trash dumpster; there are no RV electrical or sewer hook-ups. You'll reach the campground by heading south from I-70 at the Idaho Springs exit onto Highway 103 for roughly 61/2 miles and then turning onto Forest Service Road 188 (West Chicago Creek Road) for about three miles note the final mile is a narrow dirt/gravel single-lane with pullouts and two sharp switchbacks, so plan accordingly. Firewood is sold on-site during the peak season. The immediate area is popular with hikers and anglers: trails that access the Mount Evans Wilderness are close by, and West Chicago Creek is known for rainbow, brown and brook trout. Beyond the campground, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and the Pawnee National Grassland offer a wide range of recreation auto touring (including Mount Evans Road, which climbs from roughly 10,500' to over 14,000' in a short distance), biking, boating, climbing, horse and motorized trails, winter sports and wildlife viewing among them so the campground makes a convenient base for varied outings. The former mining town of Idaho Springs and the Argo Gold Mine and Mill Museum are nearby for a change of pace. Specifics on fees, reservations and seasonal openings aren't provided here, so check the Forest Service website or the local ranger district for up-to-date information and road or weather advisories; at nearly 10,000 feet, expect cooler temperatures and take altitude into account when planning.
