Cold Springs Campground sits on a mountainside in an aspen and lodgepole pine stand at about 9,200 feet, reached from the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (State Highway 119) roughly five miles north of Black Hawk. The campground contains 35 sites in total: 32 that can accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring or grate; most sites are shaded and the interior roads are gravel. Water hydrants, tent pads, vault toilets and trash service are available, and there's a small playground for young children. Note the 40-foot maximum vehicle length for the campground and that several pull-over sites sites 1 through 5 with wooden retaining walls and steps up to the campsite, and sites 9 and 11 are not suitable for large RVs or rigs with slide-outs because of their layout and access steps. The area around Cold Springs is as much about short hikes and scenic drives as it is about pitching a tent. An easy family-friendly trail leaves directly from the campground, and the short but steep quarter-mile Vista Trail climbs to wide views over the Mount Evans Wilderness and the valley below. Highways 119 and 72 form the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway for longer auto tours, and numerous creeks, rivers and nearby lakes give anglers plenty of options; off-highway vehicle riders will also find jeep roads in the vicinity. Historic Central City with events like Lou Bunch Day and seasonal opera and jazz festivals is close by, and Golden Gate Canyon State Park lies about seven miles away offering more than 35 miles of trails (some open to mountain biking and horseback riding) and fishing in streams and ponds.
