Columbine Campground sits at about 9,200 feet in a stand of aspen and lodgepole pine just off the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (Highway 119), west of Denver and a short drive northwest of historic Central City. The approach includes a stretch of gravel county road (Gilpin County Road 279) and the campground's interior road is dirt, so expect unpaved driving both to and within the site. Two loops of campsites weave through the trees; however, recent mountain pine beetle work and removal of hazardous trees mean some sites have little to no shade. The setting makes the campground a launch point for scenic drives along Highways 119 and 72, and it's popular with off-road enthusiasts a network of jeep roads is accessible from nearby forest routes while hikers and mountain bikers will find numerous trails within easy reach. Facilities are straightforward and self-contained: the campground offers a total of 46 campsites on two loops, with 41 sites suitable for both RVs and tents and 5 tent-only sites. All sites are non-electric and each includes a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; the campground provides vault toilets, water spigots, and trash service, and bundled firewood is sold by the onsite campground manager. Note that RV units are not permitted to fill tanks from the water spigots. Nearby recreation extends beyond the campground creeks, rivers and lakes in the area offer fishing, Golden Gate Canyon State Park (a short drive) has more than 35 miles of hiking trails and multiple uses for bikes and horses, and nearby Central City hosts seasonal events such as Lou Bunch Day and the Central City Opera and Jazz festivals. If you make or change a reservation, plan for a $10.00 service fee for modifications or cancellations; late cancellations may incur additional fees per the NRRS reservation policy.
