Horse Camp Primitive sits in the southeast corner of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, about 15 miles west of Redding and roughly three and a half hours north of Sacramento. The campground occupies a simple, lightly shaded bench of foothill pines where the landscapes of the Klamath, Cascade and Coast ranges meet the Sacramento Valley so you get immediate access to the lake's clear water and to the park's rugged backcountry, waterfalls and Gold Rush-era sites. With only two campsites on the loop, the site feels quiet and small-scale; both sites are configured to accept RVs and tents (including trailers and RVs towing other vehicles), and overflow parking is available. Horse owners should note this is the only campground in the park that can accommodate campers with horses, but equestrian visitors will be sharing the campground with non-horse campers. The two campsites are well-equipped for basic backcountry comfort: each site provides two picnic tables, two large bear-resistant storage lockers, a metal fire ring with a swing-arm grill and a lamp pole. The pair of sites share a vault toilet, and potable water is available from a hand pump when the supply is on there is no electricity on site so plan to bring water and batteries or generators as needed. There are no corrals, hitching posts or troughs, so horses must be high-lined or tethered to a trailer. A short stretch of gravel road leads into the campground; for more facility-specific details, reservation and fee information, or to check seasonal water availability, call the park at (530) 246-1225. From Horse Camp you're a few miles from Brandy Creek Beach (about 5.5 miles) for sandy swimming areas, picnic facilities and summer rentals, and the broader Whiskeytown area supports boating, paddling, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, gold panning, wildlife viewing and hunting in season.
