Terry S ★ 1 · Jun 2025Very bad service. They only picked up trash one time in nine days.
Alicia K ★ 2 · Jan 2020We we constantly interrupted by strangers. People walking in to view the campground, one camper came in a camped overnight with his Jeep and trailer, one guy came down from the mountains and we had to call the police. Overall we had a good time. We enjoyed the grounds and the views. But the privacy isn’t what we thought.

Nelson Point sits on the Sacramento Arm of Shasta Lake, about a short drive west of Redding off I-5 near the Salt Creek/Conflict Point area, and offers direct access to the lake's long sweep of shoreline and steep, manzanita- and evergreen-covered ridges. Lake Shasta itself rests at about 1,067 feet and has 365 miles of shoreline; on clear days you can pick out the snow-capped bulk of Mount Shasta on the horizon. The nearest public boat ramp is 6 miles away at Antlers, and nearby lakeside resorts provide boat rentals and fuel, so powerboating, non-motorized paddling, water skiing and swimming are the obvious day-use options; anglers will find trout, catfish, Chinook salmon, crappie, bluegill, white sturgeon, brown bullhead and bass in these waters. The campground also puts you within the larger Shasta-Trinity National Forest playground, where auto touring, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and winter sports are all possible depending on season and access. The site itself is small and straightforward: there is 1 campsite configured to accommodate both RVs and tents with a paved parking spur, tent pad, picnic table, grill/stove and a fire ring, plus a bear box for food storage. Vault toilets are provided but there is no drinking water on site, so bring sufficient water and be prepared for self-contained camping. Access and booking follow a seasonal rhythm: Nelson Point is open for walk-ins April 1 May 13; from May 13 September 11 the entire campground is available only by group rental and individual family reservations are not allowed unless you reserve the whole site. Reservations and refunds go through Recreation.gov (call 1-877-444-6777 to request refunds; full refunds must be requested at least 14 days before arrival, excluding Recreation.gov fees) and a non-refundable $10 reservation fee applies for online/call-center bookings. Refunds for cash or check purchases are handled by the local office and are processed within 30 days call 530-275-8113 for those transactions or for walk-up site refund requests and note that emergency-closure refunds are handled case-by-case while refunds will not be issued for naturally occurring events such as low lake level, weather or smoke.
