Katee S ★ 1 · Aug 2024We have camped at Shasta Lake many times before and this was by far the worst. The site says it holds 120 people but we are glad we only had about 20 because there is no way 120 people would have fit. There were only 2 bear lockers and both were broken. The ranger never came through to pick up trash. The bear came every night and was able to open the back of the trash can. The bear caused chaos each night, destroying ice chests and getting into vehicles. We left a night early because of how bad it was.
kristin p ★ 5 · Jan 2020Pictures don’t do this place justice. We had a really large group and still had plenty of room to spare. We definitely will be coming back!

Hirz Bay Group 1 sits on the McCloud Arm of Lake Shasta at about 1,067 feet, set among oak and manzanita on the eastern side of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, roughly 250 miles north of San Francisco along I-5 near Redding and the Gilman Road area. The campground is configured as a single large group site (total campsites: 1) capable of accommodating both RVs and tents and up to about 120 people, making it a good choice for family reunions, scout groups or club outings. Water recreation is the main draw: the nearest public boat launch at Hirz Bay is roughly a mile away and resorts on the lake provide boat rentals and fuel; the two-mile Hirz Bay Trail begins nearby for hikers. Lake Shasta's 365 miles of shoreline support a wide range of activities beyond boating swimming, water skiing and fishing for trout, catfish, Chinook salmon, crappie, bluegill, white sturgeon, brown bullhead and bass while longer day trips can take you to Lake Shasta Caverns on the McCloud Arm or up to Hirz Mountain Lookout for broad views that include Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. The group site comes with practical, group-oriented facilities: a picnic area with two large pedestal grills, a single large fire ring, two large sinks with faucets, and a paved parking lot with 21 spaces that is separate from the camping area (helpful when you bring multiple towing vehicles or trailers). Vault toilets are provided; note that reservation specifics and refund rules are handled through Recreation.gov (if you booked there call 1-877-444-6777 for refund requests) and a non-refundable $10 reservation fee applies for online or call-center bookings. Full refunds (excluding Recreation.gov fees) require a request at least 14 days before arrival; cash or check refunds are issued by check within 30 days and require calling the forest office at 530-275-8113. The forest will attempt to notify and rebook or refund reservations in the event of emergency closures, but refunds are not issued for naturally occurring conditions such as weather, smoke, low lake level or similar events; for walk-up refund requests contact the on-site host or call the same office.
