Heather C ★ 5 · Jun 2023This was an excellent, big, clean site for our field trip hosting 30 children and ten adults on our journey to visit Shasta Caverns. Lots of room to spread out our tents, plenty of areas for kids to play (including wiffleball), a big, safe campfire ring, and lots of picnic tables. the lake was nice and full and allowed for lots of swimming. We did have a bear visit us last night - it was able to tear open the back of the 'critter-proof' garbage containers, and scavenge our garbage, but did not enter the camp area.
This weekend (Fri, Oct 30 – Sun, Nov 1): Book online. Reservations online on Recreation.gov — open dates and rates come from the booking site.

Hirz Bay Group 2 sits on the McCloud Arm of Lake Shasta under a canopy of oak and manzanita, with the lake's 365 miles of shoreline and a distant profile of snow-capped Mount Shasta forming the broader backdrop. The site is designed for groups this campground offers a single reservable site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1; SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) and is suitable for gatherings of up to about 80 people. The camping area itself is separate from the parking, which has 23 paved spaces, and includes nine picnic tables, a large pedestal grill, a big open fire ring and two additional fireplaces with grates for cooking or warming. Practical on-site provisions are straightforward: two water hydrants, vault toilets and bear-proof food-storage lockers; there are no listed hookups, so plan to be mostly self-contained. From the campground you can reach the Hirz Bay boat launch in roughly a half-mile and access the 2-mile Hirz Bay Trail; nearby lake resorts provide boat rentals, marinas and fuel, so motorized and non-motorized boating, water skiing, swimming and a long list of fishing opportunities (trout, catfish, Chinook salmon, crappie, bluegill, white sturgeon, brown bullhead and bass) are all part of the experience. Getting here places you in Shasta Trinity National Forest about 250 miles north of San Francisco: follow I-5 through Sacramento and Redding, continue north across Shasta Lake and take Gilman Road east about 11 miles to the Hirz Bay entrance (from the north use the Salt Creek exit to Gilman Road). Because there is only one group site, reservations are strongly recommended; if you booked through Recreation.gov, call 1-877-444-6777 to request refunds and note that full refunds (less Recreation.gov fees) must be requested at least 14 days before arrival. An additional non-refundable reservation fee of $10 applies for call-center and online reservations. Cash or check refunds are issued by check within 30 days call 530-275-8113 for those requests or for walk-up refund questions (on-site hosts can also assist). In the event of an emergency closure, Recreation.gov will attempt to notify guests and offer alternatives or refunds; however, refunds are not issued for naturally occurring events such as low lake levels, smoke, wind, rain, snow or extreme temperatures, so plan accordingly and check current conditions before you go.
