Ponderosa Cove is laid out as a single group campsite one reservable site that sits east of the dam at about 4,400 feet and can accommodate up to 75 guests along its single loop. The character of the place comes from the towering Ponderosa pines that give off their vanilla-scented resin and shade the campsites; the loop sits just opposite the road from Stumpy Meadows Reservoir, with easy visual and walking access to the water. Practical facilities are straightforward and geared to groups: five paved parking spurs that accept RVs and trailers (each with a picnic table), plus ten walk-to tent pads where cars must parallel park on the loop; basic comfort items include two potable water faucets and vault toilets. Because this is one group site, expect a communal, close-quarters camping experience rather than individual, widely spaced campsites. Outdoor options center on Stumpy Meadows Reservoir and the surrounding Eldorado National Forest. The reservoir is a no-wake lake used for swimming, boating, and fishing for brown and rainbow trout; there's also a picnic area at the nearby Stumpy Meadows boat ramp if you want a separate day-use spot. For planning and budget, be aware that campground use is subject to recreation fees, and a reservation service fee may apply currently $8 online, $9 by phone, or $3 in person with possible change fees and a cancellation penalty if you cancel less than 14 days before arrival (you'll pay a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee). The forest's Mediterranean-style climate brings warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters, and the area offers access to more than 400 miles of hiking trails as well as scenic drives on the El Dorado County roads and nearby history at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Access from Placerville trends north toward Georgetown and then east into the Stumpy Meadows area; the campground itself sits just north of the Stumpy Boat Ramp.
