Big Silver Group Campground sits where Big Silver Creek drops into Union Valley Reservoir, in the Ponderosa pine country reached from Highway 50 by heading north on Ice House / Ice House Riverton Road for roughly 16 18 miles. The site is arranged for group use accommodating up to 50 guests and for reservation purposes it is treated as a single campsite (Total campsites: 1). That single site is configured to support both RVs and tents, though the campground's footprint includes a mix of easy-access tent/RV areas and walk-in units separated by flat, shaded stands of ponderosa; gentle to moderate slopes lead down toward the creek and the walk-in spots. Union Valley Reservoir is a short bike ride away (about five minutes), and the Union Valley Bike Trail starts right at the campground a 5.8-mile, two-lane route that's mostly easy with a few short, steep grades. Practical amenities are straightforward and oriented to self-sufficient groups: there's a group kitchen area with multiple tables, grills and a campfire circle, accessible vault toilets and trash collection, but no piped water or electricity. Stream water is nearby but must be boiled or chemically treated, or you should bring all drinking water with you. Recreation fees and reservation charges apply recreation fees vary by site/activity, and reservation service fees are $8 online, $9 by phone, or $3 in person; changes may incur service fees, and cancellations made fewer than 14 days before arrival carry a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (cut-off windows are typically 14 days). For supplies and fuel, a convenience store with a restaurant, gas and phone is within about 10 miles south on Ice House Road; the nearest town, Pollock Pines, is roughly 25 miles away. Activities at the campground include hiking, fishing, biking, and wildlife and migratory bird viewing, all within the immediate forest and reservoir corridor.
