At about 2,100 feet elevation on the eastern shore of Roosevelt Lake, Schoolhouse Campground offers 40 sites in the Mesquite Loop that can accommodate both RVs and tent camping (the site-type breakdown is 40 both RV sites & tent sites). Most spaces are pull-through and sized for trailers and multi-vehicle parking; individual sites are permitted up to 10 people and 3 vehicles, while double sites can hold up to 20 people and 6 vehicles. Each campsite typically has a shade ramada, picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, and the campground includes fully accessible sites with paved parking and stand-up grills. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided, there is a paved boat launch for motorized and non-motorized boats, but water is not available at the recreational area, so plan to bring all drinking and campsite water you'll need. The campground is primarily a gateway to Roosevelt Lake recreation the paved boat ramp provides straightforward access for powerboats, kayaks and canoes, and anglers come here for largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and channel and flathead catfish. On land you'll find mesquite trees, Sonoran Desert plants and open views of nearby mountain ridgelines; hiking, biking, wildlife viewing and photography are common pursuits from camp. Schoolhouse sits roughly 11 miles south of Roosevelt Dam and is reached from State Route 88 (Forest Road 447 leads the final stretch), making it a convenient stop for drives along the Apache Trail or for day trips to Tonto National Monument, the Arizona Trail, nearby jeep routes and towns such as Payson and Globe. Fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings can change, so verify current conditions and any reservation requirements with Tonto National Forest or the managing recreation website before you go.
