“Gates were locked so we could not access parking. No camp host available, no one answered the phone number it said to call. I had to elderly family that we had to drive down, one by one, and help lift them over the fencing. Other than that is was an amazing time.”

Timber Camp Recreation Area sits along Highway 60 in the Timber Camp Mountains, tucked into a ponderosa pine and juniper woodland that makes it a noticeably cooler spot in summer. The recreation area offers a total of 15 campsites: 14 that accommodate both RVs and tents and one designated equestrian group site. The most-used first-come, first-served section, Brundrett 1, has 13 individual sites (12 single occupancy and 1 double), a large shaded pavilion, picnic tables, fire grills and rings, and two accessible vault toilets; a fee is payable on site for these campsites. For larger groups, Brundrett 2 is a reservable group camping area (also counted in the campground tally) that can be reserved for day or overnight use, holds up to 150 people, provides a large open gravel lot suitable for group activities, an open parking area for about 15 RVs or 25 passenger vehicles, accessible vault toilets, campfire rings, grills, a pavilion and tables. Both Brundrett 2 and the equestrian group site require advanced reservations for day or overnight use; the stay limit for reservable group and equestrian sites is 14 days and trailers must be less than 45 feet. The equestrian group site is reserved strictly for horse use and includes steel corrals, two hitching rails, manure bins, a fenced and gated entrance, and room for about 25 vehicles towing trailers up to 45 feet; it is a non-electric site with a large group pavilion, group cooking grill and serving tables. Around Timber Camp you can hike, bird- and wildlife-watch, ride cross-country on horseback (there are no dedicated equestrian trails but the terrain is well suited to it), and use nearby routes for off-highway vehicle travel; in-season hunting occurs in the vicinity. Water recreation and fishing are close by Seneca Lake and Falls lie to the north on White Mountain Apache Tribal lands (WMAT permit required), and Upper Salt River whitewater rafting launches are about a 20-minute drive in spring while Globe, roughly 20 24 miles to the south on Highway 60, supplies groceries, restaurants and feed-and-tack stores for stocking up before heading back into the forest.
