Cholla Campground sits along the shores of Roosevelt Lake in the Sonoran Desert at about 2,168 feet elevation, offering open water views framed by the Sierra Ancha, Salome and Superstition ranges. The campground is notable for being the largest solar-powered campground in the United States and is organized into four loops Buckhorn (35 sites), Cane (32), Christmas (35) and Teddy Bear (31) for a verified total of 133 campsites. Every site is configured to serve both tents and RVs and comes with a shade ramada, a firepit, a grill and a picnic table; restrooms, showers and playgrounds are scattered through the loops so most campsites are a short walk from these facilities. Several developed boat ramps with accessible boat-boarding ramps put the water within easy reach, and the lakeshore itself 112 miles of shoreline and roughly 21,500 acres when full creates frequent coves and quiet points for launching small craft or stretching a line. Recreation at Cholla blends lakeside activity with desert and backcountry options: boating (including bass and ski boats), kayaking and paddleboarding launch from the ramps, while anglers find bass and other sport fish from shore or boat. Hikers can pick up sections of the Arizona Trail nearby, explore jeep routes and drive scenic stretches such as the Apache Trail (AZ 88) and Spines-to-Pines Highway (AZ 288), or visit cultural sites like Tonto National Monument; towns such as Globe and Payson are about a 45-minute drive for supplies and local history. Wildlife is abundant around the campground mule deer, coyotes, geese, fox, javelina and the occasional bald eagle are commonly seen and typical Tonto National Forest activities available in the area include auto touring, biking, climbing, horseback riding, swimming and wildlife viewing.
