“Neighbors are respectful and quiet. The drive-by checks from the camp hosts make you feel safe. The camp hosts work hard at maintenance too.”

Tortilla Campground sits along the Apache Trail corridor of Tonto National Forest, about an hour's drive northeast of the Phoenix metro area and two miles past Canyon Lake. The site operates as a winter campground, typically open from October through April when valley residents come up for cooler days; nights in winter are noticeably cold so plan warm bedding. The loop holds 76 campsites in a relatively compact arrangement each of those 76 sites is configured to accept both RVs and tents and every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a cooking grate. The campground accommodates RVs and provides sewage hookups, and sites generally offer desert views with saguaros and rugged bluffs, while a few look toward cliffs and peaks. Practical services are within easy walking distance: Tortilla Flat's restaurant, general store, post office, gift shop and a public cellular credit-card phone are directly across the road. The paved access from the Mesa area follows State Route 88 (the Apache Trail); the road is narrow with sharp curves and can carry heavy tourist traffic, so allow extra driving time and use caution. The campground is well placed for water recreation at nearby Canyon Lake (about two miles west), where public boat launches, a marina with rentals and excursion boats, shoreline picnic and fishing sites and swimming opportunities are available note that many developed lake sites require a separate day pass not included with camping. The surrounding Superstition Wilderness and the Canyon Lake Apache Trail Scenic Byway offer hiking, climbing, auto touring and wildlife viewing, and spring wildflower displays and opportunities to spot bighorn sheep and deer make great photography subjects. Trails on the western edge of the wilderness see heavy use in cooler months but can be fair to poor in places and some routes are unsuitable for horses; the broader Tonto National Forest also supports mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing and picnicking. Because seasonal conditions vary dramatically very hot, dry summers with little water and the occasional winter rain or snow check current road and trail conditions and verify campground fees and reservation policies with the Forest Service before you go.
