“Great facility with everything we needed. Restrooms were nice and clean and well stocked. Camp host was friendly and communicated everything we needed to know and then left us to enjoy our time on the mountain. After the rain passed we all had a wonderful time!”
“We camped at the ernst site and were not disappointed! It’s very quiet, not to far off the main road. Nice central gathering area with perimeter campsites. The restrooms were very well kept! We will be back!”

Moqui Group Campground sits at about 6,915 feet in a mixed forest of ponderosa pine, oak and aspen on the high country of the Coconino National Forest, a short drive south of Flagstaff along AZ-87 near the small community of Happy Jack. The campground is strictly a group facility with three distinct group sites Simmons, Spooner and Ernst each designed to hold up to 50 people (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 3). Simmons and Spooner will accept up to three trailers or RVs each (maximum length 22 feet), while Ernst is more suited to tents and smaller camping setups. Each group site includes basic, reliable infrastructure: picnic tables, metal fire rings and grills, vault toilets, piped drinking water and regular trash collection. The posted fee is $85 for a standard nonelectric group site for 10 50 people; sites can be reserved, and groups larger than 50 can reserve multiple adjacent sites to accommodate their needs. For reference the site sits roughly between Flagstaff and Payson (about 55 miles south of Flagstaff or 46 miles north of Payson) and can be found at GPS 34°35'46.1"N 111°11'55.2"W. Beyond the campground's picnic-and-fire conveniences, the surrounding national forest supplies a wide range of outdoor options: nearby C.C. Cragin Reservoir and Knoll Lake are popular for boating, fishing and swimming, while long-distance routes such as the Arizona National Scenic Trail and the General Crook National Recreation Trail, along with the historic Cabin Loop Trail System, provide miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Several historic fire lookouts dot the skyline for those interested in forest history or short interpretive visits. Services in Happy Jack are limited but useful there's a gas station, two convenience stores and a couple of restaurants so plan fuel and supplies accordingly. Because regulations, seasonal access and reservation windows can change, campers should confirm current availability, reservation requirements and any seasonal restrictions with the forest service before heading out.
