“My family and friends camp at Long Valley Group site each year and each time has been a wonderful experience. I enjoy the spaciousness, selection of spaces for tents or RVs, clean toilets, large fire ring, and no other random campers nearby. ”

Long Valley Group Campground sits at about 6,950 feet among tall ponderosa pines on a roughly 5-acre parcel adjacent to a meadow and the historic Long Valley Forest Service work center. The campground is a single, large group site designed to handle one organized party it can hold up to 300 people and 50 vehicles and is configured to accept both RVs and tents. Facilities are intentionally simple and suited to groups: picnic tables, individual grills, a large communal fire ring, trash collection, and vault toilets. There are no electric hookups; after the first 50 people, organizers must supply additional portable toilets at a rate of one per 25 people, so plan sanitation logistics accordingly. Fees for a non-electric group reservation are tiered: $85 for 10 50 people, $110 for 51 100, and $135 for groups of 101 300. The site is accessed from State Route 87 near Clint's Well, about 55 miles south of Flagstaff and 36 miles north of Payson, with short stretches on Forest Road 141 and 147A (GPS 34°31'16.2"N 111°19'47.6"W). The immediate area is a launch point for a wide range of Coconino National Forest activities: anglers and boaters head to nearby C.C. Cragin Reservoir and Knoll Lake, while hikers, mountain bikers and riders can link to the Arizona National Scenic Trail, the General Crook National Recreation Trail and the historic Cabin Loop Trail System; several fire lookout towers are also in the vicinity. The small community of Happy Jack provides basic services gas, convenience stores and a couple of restaurants but the campground itself is a primitive, group-oriented facility, so check with the Coconino National Forest office for current road conditions, reservation details and any seasonal closures before you go.
