CHRISTOPHER A ★ 5 · May 2022We had a great night and saw the lunar eclipse. We had a little trouble finding the turnoff but we missed the Turney Gulch sign, so make sure you look out for that. Also, a high clearance truck or 4x4 would be recommended. We fished, caught fish and had a great time. Don't forget to visit the Saloon in Crown King and have the best wings around! I wish the birds didn't wake us up at 4:12 am, chirping, but thats nature and its great!

Turney Gulch Group sits at about 6,000 feet in the ponderosa pine stands of the Bradshaw Mountains, a single group campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) designed for larger parties it can hold up to 100 people and up to 30 vehicles and is designated to accommodate both RVs and tents. The campsite has a rustic mountain character: a covered picnic shelter, 15 picnic tables, several fire grills, an accessible vault toilet, potable drinking water and on-site trash collection. It's the only group campground immediately adjacent to the Horse Thief Basin Recreation Area and lies roughly one mile past Horse Thief Lake, about seven miles southeast of Crown King. The approach is on an unimproved dirt road and can be rough; high-clearance 4x4 vehicles are highly recommended. Reservations are required through the recreation reservation system (call 1-877-444-6777 or use the availability button) and the Bradshaw Ranger District (1-928-443-8000) can answer questions about access, fees and any seasonal restrictions. The setting opens up a variety of outdoor options: Horse Thief Lake is nearby for boating (electric motors and oars only) and fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish and sunfish, while the surrounding Prescott National Forest offers hunting, wildlife viewing and access to trails in the Castle Creek Wilderness. Wildlife in the area includes deer, bobcats, coyotes, mountain lions, foxes, rabbits, reptiles and a range of raptors including bald eagles, so pack appropriate food storage and be wildlife-aware. Summers are milder than the lowland deserts but can produce afternoon thunderstorms from late June through mid-September; winters are cool to cold with occasional snow. For basics and a touch of local history, the small town of Crown King a former mining town with a general store carrying essential supplies is the nearest resupply point. Additional regional opportunities such as horseback riding and horse camping, picnicking, overnight cabins or fire lookouts, and visitor center services are available elsewhere in Prescott National Forest.
