What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (239 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Great views and quiet area. Showers and bathroom were nearby in each loop, making it convenient for camping needs. ”

Braydon K 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice view but site 13 and 14 are under a huge lamppost using daylight strength bulbs. The idea that I would need an eye mask to camp in the woods didn’t cross my mind. Truly it was very difficult to sleep and at the very least the bulbs should be changed to a softer strength”

eric r 2 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice, clean, quiet park. Will stay there again in future.”

About

Joplin Campground sits on a narrow peninsula that reaches into Lake Ouachita, offering direct water views framed by the folded ridges of the Ouachita Mountains. The lake itself covers more than 40,000 acres and is known for unusually clear water, which makes this stretch popular with scuba divers as well as anglers chasing world-class stripers. Wildlife is part of the picture here too: deer and osprey are common, and visitors have reported rarer sightings from bobcats to the lake's freshwater jellyfish. The broader recreation network around Joplin includes a marked boating trail that points out shoreline geology, marinas and concession services nearby, horseback riding rentals, and the resort and thermal attractions of Hot Springs about 23 24 miles to the east; the Ouachita National Forest and scenic overlooks such as Hickorynut Mountain Vista are also close enough for day trips. Spring and fall are typically mild, summers are hot and humid, and winters can swing from below freezing to the 60s, so plan clothing and lake activities seasonally. The campground itself provides 58 campsites in four loops (Loop A: 17 sites; Loop B: 13 sites; Loop C: 10 sites; Loop D: 18 sites) and a mix of site types to suit tents and recreational vehicles: 28 sites are configured for both RVs and tents, 17 are RV-only, and 13 are tent-only. All sites have electrical hookups, but pads are unpaved, relatively small, and vary considerably in length because of the peninsula's terrain no uniform campsite lengths are posted, so call the fee booth at 870-867-4472 if you need help matching your rig to a particular site. There are no individual water hookups at campsites, but a potable water faucet is provided in each loop; shared amenities include a dump station, fish cleaning station, hot showers, a boat ramp and a swim beach. The location is unstaffed; for general park questions contact the main office at (501) 767-2101.
