Tompkins Bend sits on the south end of Lake Ouachita against a backdrop of forested ridges in the Ouachita Mountains, about 25 miles west of Hot Springs along US-270. The campground holds 75 sites arranged across four loops Loop A (16 sites), Loop B (14), Loop C (16) and Loop D (29) with 61 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 14 tent-only sites; most spaces are roomy enough to host two camping units. On-site facilities include a boat ramp for quick lake access, hot showers, a dump station and a fish-cleaning station, plus a playground for kids. The site is unstaffed, so plan ahead for fees, reservations and seasonal questions by calling the main office at (501) 767-2101. The lake itself is a defining feature: fed by the Ouachita River and ringed by National Forest, Lake Ouachita's clear water stretches over about 40,000 acres and supports scuba diving alongside the usual boating, water-skiing, jet skiing and fishing. Hikers will find the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT) passing nearby, and the Corps' boating trail highlights interesting shoreline geology. The wider landscape supports biking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing black bears, deer and bobcats inhabit the hills, and bald eagles are commonly seen in winter. Nearby services and recreation include marinas, concessions, motels and restaurants, Hot Springs National Park's thermal attractions, and miles of Ouachita National Forest roads and trails, including the Wolf Pen Gap OHV area for off-highway vehicles.
