“It was hard to get a reservation due to limited spots, but what a great experience. First thing in the morning we had a herd of bison walking through our site and over the creek to the grassy area beyond! We saw bear on the Slough Creek Trail. Fantastic!”
“Slough Creek is the best location to Lamar Valley. We enjoyed our stay a lot. The only downfall is that there’s not enough sites. ”

Slough Creek Campground sits on Yellowstone's Northern Range at about 6,250 feet (1,905 m), at the end of a two-mile dirt road that drops you into broad grasslands where Slough Creek soon meets the Lamar River. The campground has 16 sites, each designated for both RVs and tents, though the road and site sizes make it a better fit for tents and small RVs than for long motorhomes. Camps here feel quiet and open: by day the area is one of the park's richest wildlife zones bison, elk, pronghorn and deer graze the meadows while coyotes, wolves and the occasional grizzly or black bear move through; road pullouts in the nearby Lamar Valley are popular for watching herds and predators. The Slough Creek Trail starts nearby, following an old wagon route into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness with an early steep climb that opens onto a pair of meadows (be alert for bears and moose). Fishing along Slough Creek and the Lamar and Yellowstone rivers, hiking, backpacking and photography are the immediate draws; after dark the lack of lights and hill-to-hill views make for broad starfields and an often-heard chorus of wolf howls. Practical details are straightforward but seasonal: the nightly fee is $20 per site, and many services (food-storage lockers, trash/recycling, a staff or volunteer host, potable water and vault toilets) are available only seasonally. There are no showers. Reservations follow Recreation.gov policy: you can change a reservation without a fee if the new dates fall within the original booking window or you switch to a same-price site for the same dates; switching to dates entirely outside the original reservation carries a $10 change fee. Cancellations made before arrival incur a $10 service fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival costs the $10 service fee and forfeits the first night's rate (one-night reservations are forfeited in full). No-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's rate. Partial refunds for early departures may be possible through the call center, and refunds are returned to the original payment method (check or cash refunds are mailed and can take 6 8 weeks); in an emergency closure fees are refunded in full. Slough Creek lies roughly 7 miles from the Tower Roosevelt junction, about 30 miles from Yellowstone's North Entrance at Gardiner, MT, and about 26 miles from the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City, so plan your vehicle and timing accordingly on the dirt approach.
