“We had the most amazing time camping in Mammoth. We went mid October and the weather and scenery were absolutely stunning. We wanted time to decompress and just be in Gods complete beauty. We were not once disappointed. ”
“Rangers at the campground were very helpful and good to deal with. Our camping experience there was exceptionally good. ”

Mammoth Campground sits in the Mammoth Hot Springs area about five miles from Yellowstone's North Entrance near Gardiner, MT, but it is currently closed until further notice because of infrastructure damage from the June 2022 flooding. When open, the campground occupies a high sagebrush steppe dotted with Rocky Mountain juniper and Douglas-fir that provide shade on hot days; the drive in climbs the Gardner River canyon where riparian willows, cottonwoods and steep sandstone walls create a different microclimate and frequent wildlife sightings. Visitors to the Mammoth area typically combine camping with walks along the boardwalks above the steaming terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs, scenic drives to view the travertine formations, fishing and wildlife watching around the northern park roads, or visits to the historic Fort Yellowstone district; in winter the terrace area is also used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The campground's layout totals 67 sites all listed as accommodating both RVs and tents arranged primarily in Loop A (38 sites) and Loop B (17 sites), with an 11-site tent loop and one additional tent site noted in the reservation inventory. Basic services you can expect (when the facility is operating) include potable water spigots, year-round flush toilets, food storage lockers, trash and recycling collection, and seasonal offerings such as firewood for sale, an amphitheater and a staff or volunteer host; there are no showers and cell reception is limited. Even though the site is closed now, it's useful to know how reservations and fees are handled for Mammoth: the posted camping fee is $25 per night per site. Reservation policies allow changes without a fee if you extend or shorten dates that remain within the original reservation period or swap to a same-priced site for the same dates; changing to completely different dates incurs a $10 change fee, and reservations that included dates beyond the maximum booking window cannot be altered until 18 days after booking. Cancellations processed before arrival incur a $10 service fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival keeps that $10 and also forfeits the first night's rate (one-night reservations are fully forfeited). No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons. Refund requests go through Recreation.gov (credit-card refunds are returned to the original card; cash or check refunds are mailed as Treasury checks and may take 6 8 weeks), and in the event of an emergency closure all fees are refunded. Because conditions and access can change, check the park's Mammoth pages on the National Park Service website for current status and directions before you plan a trip.
