Steve B ★ 5 · May 2023Great out of the way campground. Hiking trails nearby, and marvelous hosts. The COE is adding gravel and border boards to the sites, may make it a bit tight getting in, but really helped eliminate any mud that we might have been parked on.

Bee Run Campground
Open in Google Maps ↗
Bee Run Campground sits on a ridge of forested hills in central West Virginia, about three miles from Interstate 79 (Flatwoods exit) and within easy reach of the Sutton Lake project office (1 mile east of Sutton). The facility is very small there is just 1 campsite and it's primitive in character: the site is set at the top of the hill with no direct lake view but open scenes of West Virginia hills and frequent wildlife sightings. That single site is configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and comes with a metal fire ring, a picnic table and a lantern post; the campground is served by a volunteer host, vault toilets and modest security lighting. Because amenities are limited, visitors should plan for no hookups or full-service comforts and check with the Sutton Lake project office for current information on fees, reservation options and seasonal openings before arriving. Despite the campground's compact size, Sutton Lake's 40 miles of shoreline and nearby facilities make this a good base for water- and land-based recreation. The Sutton Lake Marina and Ship Store, day-use picnic area, swimming beach and boat launch are a short drive (or a hike for the determined) from the campsite, and the lake supports motorized boating, water skiing and a productive fishery for largemouth and smallmouth bass and crappie. Hikers and bikers can explore trails in the adjacent Elk River Wildlife Management Area, and the Jeremiah Carpenter Trail leads to the Sutton Dam north abutment with clear views of the dam complex. For quick errands or a change of pace, the historic town of Sutton, the Bulltown Historic Area and the Flatwoods outlet mall are all within easy driving distance.
