Gerald Freeman Camp sits at the upper end of Sutton Lake in central West Virginia, about 70 miles north of Charleston and just east of the small town of Sutton off I-79. Sutton Lake itself stretches 14 miles up the Elk River and covers roughly 1,440 acres with about 40 miles of shoreline that curls into quiet coves; the surrounding landscape is a mosaic of rolling hills and mixed hardwoods oak, hickory, poplar and cherry that support abundant wildlife from white-tailed deer and wild turkey to ruffed grouse and waterfowl. The lake and its downstream waters are a draw for anglers bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish thrive in the reservoir, while muskie and walleye are noted below Sutton Dam and stocked trout are found in the downstream reaches. Fire roads and former hunting trails make for varied hiking and mountain biking near the campground and into the adjacent Elk River Wildlife Management Area, and organized children's programs run through the summer; in short, the site supports boating, water sports, fishing, environmental education, picnicking, playground use, wildlife viewing and other recreation. The campground offers 152 sites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged among six loops: Monarch (46), Black Bear (37), Honey Bee (25), Cardinal (24), Brook Trout (14) and Golden Delicious (6). Campground facilities include boat ramps and an on-site marina with a snack bar, playgrounds and a basketball court for younger visitors, hot showers, flush toilets, water fountains and two trailer water/dump stations. A mix of sites provides utility hookups for RV users; for specifics about hookups, fees, reservation policies or seasonal openings, call the project office (304) 765-2267 note that GPS directions can be unreliable in this area and calling ahead is recommended. If you're exploring farther afield, the nearby Elk River Wildlife Management Area offers nearly 18,000 acres of public hunting and varied terrain, and additional first-come, first-served camping is available at Bakers Run and Bee Run primitive campgrounds.
