“Spectacle Lake has to be our favorite campground!!! It has a beautiful beach and is very rustic. It's the best 2 weeks of the year.”

Spectacle Lake Campground sits on the east shore of a clear, 166-acre lake and is built into a mixed-species forest at roughly 1,770 feet elevation. The lake's long, sandy swim area about 500 feet dominates the shoreline and makes swimming and beach time a primary draw for families, while the water itself is open to all types of boating, motorized and non-motorized. Anglers will find walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, panfish and trout in the lake, and wildlife viewing is common along the shore and in the surrounding woods. A pleasant 2.5-mile hike follows part of the old Thunder Lake Railroad bed on the Spectacle-Kentuck Trail to Kentuck Lake Campground, so day hikers and those looking to link sites on foot have a straightforward route to explore. The campground is compact and easy to get around: there are 34 single family sites in total, 33 of which accommodate both RVs and tents and one that is tent-only. Sites come with picnic tables plus fire rings with attached grills; drinking water and vault toilets are available but there are no hookups listed, so plan on self-contained amenities for RV stays. Some sites are first-come, first-served while others can be reserved in advance check the Forest Service recreation page for current reservation windows and seasonal openings. Spectacle Lake is reached via a series of forest roads northeast of the City of Eagle River (about a 16-mile trip from town), where groceries, fuel and other services are available year-round.
