“Wonderful place, nice campsites. This was our 4th year there and we will continue to come up for as long as we can.”
“Beautiful lake with a great little beach and sites are very big. Great hikes from the campground and the campground was well maintained. The only reason not to give an excellent rating is lack of showers. ”
“Nice clean camp sites. Very wooded. Enjoyed our stay”

Franklin Lake Campground sits among a mature stand of pine and hemlock at about 1,700 feet, with historic stone and log structures from the Civilian Conservation Corps scattered through the trees and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The campground fronts Franklin Lake, an 892-acre body of clear water with a sandy beach and room for both motorized and non-motorized boating; anglers will find walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, rock bass, perch and bluegill. Trails radiate from the site, including a partly accessible 1-mile interpretive loop that passes trees more than 400 years old, a connector to the 13-mile Hidden Lakes Trail that loops past small lakes and old hemlock stands, and a roughly 6-mile route out to Anvil Lake. Wildlife viewing, swimming, paddling and day hikes are the immediate draws here, and Franklin Lake also serves as a convenient jumping-off point for wider forest activities such as mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV use on designated routes, and seasonal hunting on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest landscape. The campground has 77 single-family sites in two loops North (37 sites) and South (40 sites) with 75 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 2 designated tent-only sites. Sites come with picnic tables, metal fire rings and grills; the campground provides drinking water and a mix of accessible flush and vault toilets. Management splits sites between first-come/first-served and reservable: 34 sites are available on a first-come basis and 43 can be reserved in advance, so plan ahead for holiday weekends and peak summer dates. There are no other utility hookups specified, and access requires a few miles on designated forest roads off Highway 70 (the campground is roughly 15 miles east of Eagle River), so check current road and campground status, reservation options and any applicable fees on the U.S. Forest Service Chequamegon-Nicolet recreation pages before you go.
