Cranesnest Campground sits beside the John W. Flannagan Reservoir in the rolling Cumberland Mountains of southwest Virginia, with the lake surface held at roughly 1,400 feet above sea level behind the dam completed in 1964. The reservoir covers about 1,145 acres and offers nearly 40 miles of shoreline, so even with a small campground you're rarely far from water: deep coves and clear pockets of lake are known for bass, walleye and trout fishing, and multiple boat launch ramps at the site make getting a canoe, kayak or motorboat on the water straightforward. Project lands here adjoin Jefferson National Forest, so trails and backcountry access are within reach, and the larger regional attractions include Breaks Interstate Park a short drive for dining, a museum and steeper geology, plus guided rafting and rock-climbing opportunities if you want to push beyond lake-based recreation. The campground itself contains 30 total sites split evenly between 15 RV sites and 15 tent sites, with electric hookup options available for RVs, bath houses, playgrounds, picnic shelters equipped with grills and horseshoe pits facilities that make it easy to host family gatherings or a low-key weekend with friends. Launch ramps and nearby water-sport access mean you can move quickly from campsite to fishing or paddling; on land there's room for hiking, wildlife viewing and other recreation concession activities in the area. Specifics about fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings aren't provided here, so plan to check the official park or managing office before you go; bring standard camp supplies (and water-safety gear for boating) and you'll find a compact, well-serviced base for both quiet fishing days and more active outings into the surrounding forest and river country.
