Lower Bowns Campground sits at about 7,000 feet on the east flank of Boulder Mountain beside Lower Bowns Reservoir, a small, quiet lake where boating, canoeing and trout fishing are the main draws. The site is sparsely forested with pinyon and juniper, so shade is limited and views open to Boulder Mountain on the west and the Waterpocket Fold and Henry Mountains to the east. The reservoir supports rainbow, brook and cutthroat trout, and nearby trails invite hikers and mountain bikers; riders will also find access to the Rosebud ATV Trail for off-highway vehicle riding. Scenic Highway 12 runs within easy reach, and Capitol Reef National Park is roughly a 45-minute drive for additional hiking, historic sites and desert canyons. The campground has five campsites in total, and all five accommodate both RVs and tents. Among those are three accessible sites: a group site that can hold up to 50 people and two single accessible sites that each accommodate up to 10. Roads and parking spurs throughout the campground are gravel, and vault toilets are provided; no other services (piped water or hookups) are listed, so plan to bring your own water and supplies. Because access is via Forest Road 186 about five miles off Highway 12 (roughly 16 miles east of the Highway 24/12 junction near Torrey), check current road conditions and the Fishlake National Forest website or local ranger district for up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal access before you go. In the broader Fishlake National Forest you'll also have opportunities for hunting, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, interpretive programs, and staying overnight in managed cabins or lookouts.
