Elkhorn Campground sits high on Thousand Lake Mountain about 20 miles northeast of Loa, Utah, at roughly 9,300 feet elevation, and is shaded by a dense mix of aspen, pine and spruce that lines campsites and the meadow beyond. The site is small and deliberate in scale: total campsites: 8, with a site type breakdown of 8 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites, so each site accommodates either a tent or an RV. Roads and parking spurs inside the campground are gravel, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and the Elkhorn Ranger Station is visible just across the meadow for easy access to local information. For larger groups there's a single group site that will hold up to 75 people and includes large tables, grills, built-in Dutch oven cooking surfaces and a fire ring with benches a practical setup for communal cooking and evening gatherings. Summer wildflowers color the nearby meadow and the tree cover provides pleasant shade during hot afternoons. Recreation radiates outward from the campground: miles of trails, including the Great Western Trail, crisscross Thousand Lake Mountain and create routes for hikers, mountain bikers and off-highway vehicles, while numerous alpine lakes in the area draw anglers and people looking for high-country scenery. More broadly, Fishlake National Forest supports activities such as boating, horseback riding and horse camping, fire lookouts/cabins overnight, interpretive programs, hunting, visitor center services and abundant wildlife viewing; some of those opportunities are accessed from trailheads or lakes a short drive from Elkhorn rather than inside the campground itself. Access to Elkhorn requires travel on Forest Road 206 for about eight miles of dirt driving that can be narrow, steep and single-lane in places, so check current road conditions before you go. Fees, reservations and seasonal openings are managed by the Forest Service; contact the Elkhorn Ranger Station or the Fishlake National Forest office or website for the latest information.
