Avintaquin Campground sits at about 9,000 feet among stands of tall Douglas-fir on the rim of Indian Canyon, roughly midway between Duchesne and Helper along Highway 191. The camping area contains 14 total campsites, and all 14 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, so groups with mixed rigs won't need to split up. In addition to the single-family sites each outfitted with a picnic table, campfire ring and a utility table the campground includes one group site that can handle up to 50 people and provides several picnic tables, grills, a larger campfire ring, utility tables and parking for 10 vehicles. Basic services are limited: vault toilets and trash collection are provided, but there is no running water, so plan to bring your own supply. Mule deer and elk are commonly seen near the campground, and the forested setting creates a quiet, wildlife-rich backdrop for evenings around the fire. Access to Avintaquin is via Reservation Ridge Scenic Backway, a one-mile dirt spur off Highway 191 that is open to off-highway vehicles, mountain bikes and hikers; this route and other nearby trails give you direct, motorized and non-motorized access into the surrounding high-country. Avintaquin Creek and a number of springs are also close by for short walks and wildlife viewing, while broader Ashley National Forest opportunities fishing, boating, swimming, horseback riding, interpretive programs and visiting fire lookout cabins are available within the forest at larger trailheads and recreation areas. Because the campground sits at high elevation and the access road is unpaved, check current Forest Service information for seasonal openings, fee and reservation policies, and any road advisories before you go, and come prepared with water and supplies.
