What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (429 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Everything was clean, and we didn’t see any dogs off leash. Leash laws are very important to us. We have dogs and I’m afraid of unleashed dogs running up to our dogs. That are always on a leash. ”

Diania M 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Our campsite was perfect. Had good shade tree and kids park next to our camper. ”

About

McCown Valley sits on the main channel of the Brazos River at Whitney Lake, framed by gently rolling hills of cedar, live oak and post oak where deer and wild turkeys are commonly seen. The park is part of a larger equestrian area and offers about five miles of horse trails that move through open pasture and wooded lakeshore; longer rides can link into the 12.5-mile Hopewell Trail that follows the shoreline and wildlife areas. Water recreation is a major draw here Whitney Lake supports boating, kayaking, swimming and a range of water sports, and anglers with a Texas fishing license can pursue bass, crappie and catfish from shore or from a boat. Other opportunities around the campground include hiking and biking on local trails, wildlife viewing, picnicking and a small playground; nearby concession services and privately owned lodging are available for visitors who want additional amenities off-site. The campground is open year-round and provides a mix of site types to suit RVs, tent campers and horse riders: there are 106 total campsites, including 39 equestrian sites, 47 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, and 20 tent-only sites. The park layout specifically lists the EQUE loop with 39 sites and a NONE loop containing 13 sites (the park also offers 13 primitive tent sites and five sleeping shelters, plus a day-use picnic shelter). Many sites offer electric and/or water hookups; on-site facilities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station, and a boat ramp provides lake access. The park is reached from Highway 22 near Whitney, roughly 20 miles west of I-35 at Hillsboro; fees, reservations and current rules are administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so check the Corps reservation site or call the park office for up-to-date rates and reservation requirements before you go.
