Plowman Creek Campground sits on the west side of Whitney Lake where the Brazos River widens and moves over stretches of sand and rock. The surrounding landscape is gently rolling, dotted with cedar, live oak and post oak that shade campsites and trailheads. Water is the draw here: a boat ramp puts you on the river and into Whitney Lake for boating, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, and anglers can expect bass, crappie and catfish within easy reach. Trail users find plenty to do as well the 12.5-mile Hopewell Trail threads along the lake and through wildlife areas, open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders; you can head north toward Kimball Bend Park or south toward Lakeside Village and Powelldale Mountain. Equestrian riders in particular will appreciate that Plowman Creek provides direct access to the McCown Valley riding area and has an equestrian camping section designed for overnight horse trail use. The campground is open year-round and contains 44 sites in all, with a mix to suit different kinds of campers: 22 sites are set up for both RVs and tents, 10 are designated equestrian sites, and 12 are tent-only. Utility details are clearly laid out on-site thirty locations (sites 1 7, 10 24 and equestrian sites 35 44) have water and 30-amp electrical hookups, while twelve sites (8, 9 and 25 34) provide water hookups only and every site includes an upright BBQ cooker, a covered picnic table and a ground cooker/fire ring. The park also offers two restrooms with showers, flush toilets, drinking water, a trailer dump station, a playground and multi-use trail access. For fees, reservations and any seasonal notices, consult the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or Hill County park pages before you go; the campground is reached from Kopperl about a mile south on FM 56 with signed access into the park.
