Kimball Bend Park sits on Whitney Lake along the main channel of the Brazos River in central Texas, where the river moves over stretches of sand and rock and the surrounding rolling hills are dotted with cedar, live oak and post oak. The campground is open year-round and provides a compact but well-served base for both RV and tent campers: there are 36 campsites configured for use by RVs and tents, and sites offer water and electrical hookups with 50-amp service available. Onsite facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station and a boat ramp, so you can stage a fishing trip or launch a canoe without a long drive. For specifics on fees, current reservation policies and any seasonal restrictions, check with the Corps of Engineers or the park office before you go. Recreational options extend well beyond the campsites. Anglers can fish for bass, crappie and catfish in the lake and river, while paddlers and power boaters have easy access from the ramp; swimming and other water sports are also commonly enjoyed here. The Chisholm Trail crosses the campground, threaded with local history from the cattle drives of the late 19th century, and the nearby 12.5-mile Hopewell Trail welcomes hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders equestrian riders can ride the McCown Valley area and use the Plowman Creek equestrian camping area for overnight stays. Other activities around Whitney Lake include wildlife viewing, picnicking and playgrounds; the park lies south of Kopperl and north of Cleburne along Highway 174, with the park entrance just at the Highway 174 bridge, making it an easy stop for travelers exploring this stretch of central Texas.
