“Whitney Lake has excellent Army Corp camping but I didn't stay at this specific campground. What I do is donate money to Federal park services which offer complimentary camping by paying for reservations I don't use.”

Lofers Bend West sits on the Brazos arm of Whitney Lake in central Texas, where low rolling hills clothed in cedar, live oak and post oak drop to rocky shoreline and open water. The campground contains 69 sites in total: 46 sites are sized to accommodate both RVs and tents while 23 are tent-only. The facility complements its sites with a single group campsite and a day-use group picnic shelter that has water and electrical hookups, and campers will find standard conveniences such as flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a boat ramp and a playground. Wildlife is part of the picture here white-tailed deer are commonly seen along with raccoons and foxes and the park is one of several Corps of Engineers units around Whitney Lake, which draws over two million visitors a year for its range of outdoor options. Activities at Lofers Bend West focus on the lake: boating, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are all convenient from the ramp, and anglers fish for bass, crappie and catfish right off the shoreline or from a boat. Hikers and bikers will appreciate nearby trails, and the larger Whitney Lake complex includes the McCown Valley Equestrian Area and the 12.5-mile Hopewell Trail a multi-use equestrian route that follows the lake and wildlife areas; trail riders can camp overnight at the equestrian area at Plowman Creek Park. Day visitors will find picnic spots and a playground close to the campsites, and water and electrical hookups are available at numerous sites. Because this is a Corps-managed recreation area, expect camping fees and reservation rules that can change seasonally check the Corps or park reservation website before you go for current rates, seasonal access and how to reserve a specific site.
