Winkler Park is a compact, primitive campground on the northern shore of Belton Lake in central Texas, offering 14 lakefront sites (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 14; SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 14 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) arranged as paved back-in pads. The sites do not have electrical hookups, but each has an individual drinking-water hookup; a central restroom building provides flush toilets and hot showers. Covered picnic tables and grills at each site make meals simple, and while campsites themselves are largely open to the sun, the perimeter and stretches of shoreline are forested so you can find shade nearby. Belton Lake built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1954 spans roughly 12,300 acres and winds through the Leon and Little rivers with many coves and fingers; that configuration concentrates fish and creates sheltered coves for launching small boats. Wildlife is a visible part of the experience here: deer and wild turkey move through the trees and water birds such as great blue herons, ducks, geese and a variety of songbirds are commonly seen, with the occasional bald eagle scouting from the shoreline; a 25-acre constructed wetland on the opposite shore further enhances habitat. Recreation at Winkler Park focuses on water and wildlife pursuits: anglers target hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, white bass, catfish and sunfish, while boaters take advantage of the lake's winding channels and coves. A dump station and a boat ramp are available to registered campers at nearby White Flint Park, approximately one mile south. Hikers and naturalists can combine a camp stay with a visit to Miller Springs Nature Area below Belton Dam, which features a Leon River trail, a restored historic bridge and several wildlife-viewing points, and local history seekers will find the old "Charter Oak" on the Leon River and the Stage Coach Inn in Salado within easy reach; the spillway wall at Belton Dam is painted with a mural that depicts Bell County's history. Belton Lake sits adjacent to Fort Hood, so there are several military-related points of interest for enthusiasts. Winkler Park is accessed from the Temple/Belton area off State Highway 53/36 along the Leon River; for facility-specific information and current availability call (254) 742-3050.
