Westcliff Park sits on the southwestern shore of Belton Lake on a bluff that gives most campsites a clear view across the water. The campground contains 29 sites in total: 24 that accommodate both RVs and tents and five tent-only primitive sites. Most of the RV/tent sites include electric hookups, and every site comes with a covered picnic table, grill and lantern pole. Showers and restrooms are provided, and the swim beach, two-lane boat ramp and playground are all within easy walking distance from the loop; day users share those lakefront amenities with campers. The landscape here is largely open prairie with scattered shade trees around picnic areas and selected sites, and the lake shoreline, man-made wetlands across the water and adjacent riparian corridor support deer, wild turkey, herons, waterfowl and, on occasion, a bald eagle. Belton Lake itself formed by Belton Dam in 1954 and stretching some 12,300 acres with a long, narrow, winding shoreline and many coves makes Westcliff a convenient base for boating, fishing and water sports. Anglers head out for hybrid striped bass, largemouth and white bass, catfish and sunfish; the park's two-lane ramp and protected coves are useful for launching and exploring. For land-based outings, the Miller Springs Nature Area below the dam offers a trail along the Leon River, a restored historic bridge and several wildlife-viewing points, and history buffs can visit the old "Charter Oak" site, the Stage Coach Inn in nearby Salado, or the large mural on the spillway wall of Belton Dam that traces Bell County's past. The lake sits adjacent to Fort Hood, which has points of interest for military history enthusiasts.
